Enhance the beauty in your smile with aesthetic dental crowns from your dentist in Columbia, MO

Porcelain crowns are tooth caps that can protect and enhance teeth that have experienced significant damage. The durable, aesthetic solution can improve both oral health and the appearance of the smile. If you are embarrassed by visible damage to a tooth, we invite you to call the office of Chase Patton, D.D.S., to ask us about our aesthetic dental crowns.

When are aesthetic crowns necessary?

You may need a dental crown in any of the following scenarios:

  • Replacement of a large, old filling
  • Treatment of severe decay
  • A chipped or broken tooth due to trauma
  • Tooth replacement with a dental implant

Types of dental crowns

Dental crowns can be made of a variety of materials. Porcelain is one of the most common. The durable ceramic possesses many of the same characteristics of natural tooth enamel and can be color-matched to neighboring teeth. Zirconia crowns are another option. Zirconia is a type of ceramic that is part of the titanium family. This material can be color-matched to nearby teeth, but it is not as translucent as porcelain. Dr. Patton will work with you to choose the type of material that is best for your needs.

The dental crown process

The process for receiving aesthetic dental crowns typically takes two separate appointments. During the first visit, the tooth will be cleaned and reshaped for the crown. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab for fabrication of the custom crown. During the interim, you will be fitted with a temporary crown to protect the tooth.

Once the final crown is ready, you will return to the office for final placement. The tooth will be etched to allow the dental cement to fully bond with the crown and tooth. The crown will be placed and secured with the cement.
